History
The 2006 Capitol Peak 50 miler was a success, even with 3 inches of snow on the higher country and rain/mud in the lower country. The course was shortened by about 5 miles from the previous year and so times were much more reasonable (See 2006 results). The 2-person and 4-person relay was the new option for runners. However, we decided to eliminate the 4-person relay in 2007 since it was not as popular and thought that a 55K option would be more appealing. The 2007 event will have a 55K and the 2-person relay. The 55K option follows the same course as the 50 mile route, but at the 27 mile mark (Wedekind), the 55K route goes straight back to the Falls Creek finish and skips the Hells Creek loop. This 55K option can be taken in the middle of the 50 mile race, if it's not your day and still want to finish something shorter. The 2-person relay remains the same: a 27 mile leg and a 23 mile leg (exchanging at Wedekind).
The results of the inaugural 2005 Capitol Peak 50 miler appear to be deceiving with a 63% finishing rate (See 2005 results). However, this was due to many factors that won't exist in the 2006 event, including a longer finishing cutoff time for the regular start and no unforgiving brush that was so thick during the June 2005 event. But, if you think the 50 mile distance will take more than 13 hours, please take the early start (at 5:00 am) giving 14 hours. The course will still have lot's of mud and as always long climbs and descent on 90% single track trails. We also changed the start at Falls Creek which means that the Capitol Peak climb will occur about 15 miles and the Hells Bottom climb will occur about 38 miles. This year we also replaced the 25K for a relay. See Race Info for more details about the Relay!
The Capitol Peak 50 mile has replaced the 50K that was held on October 2, 2004. This new 50 mile course will be challenging since it is mostly on single-track trails and there are there is a 2,000 ft climb at mile 39 into the race.
The 2004 Capitol Peak 50K Ultramarathon course was established from Capitol Peak Mega Fat Ass (see 2004 50K results). The 2004 Capitol Peak 50K course was based on the January 2003 Capitol Peak Mega Fat Ass course. The 2003 course replaced the original 50K fat ass course that took place in the northern portion of Capitol Forest in January 2002, mostly on dirt-bike trails. There were only 8 participants in 2002 and those that ran the course had some well deserved complaints of the chosen route. In 2003 there were 96 total runners combining both the 50K and 25K events including 30 in the 50k. In January 2004, there were 130 participants including the 24 who finished the 50K despite nasty weather. The 2004 25K was the same as in 2003 but the 50k was changed due to logging activities on the second loop near the infamous Hells Creek. Instead the course for the 50k repeated the 25K loop, which meant two climbs up Capitol Peak. So far each year all runners attempting the 50k have finished giving us a perfect record. And another streak we've got going for the Fat Ass is challenging weather conditions: ice in '02, fog and rain in '03 and snow and high winds in '04. However, in June, for the 50 mile and 25 Km, the weather is typically warm and sunny!!
